Walmart Announces Plans For Healthier Food

Walmart gained Michelle Obama's support at the announcement

Last week First Lady of the United States Michelle Obama and Walmart president and CEO Bill Simon announced the big store had big plans for a healthier future.

Walmart plans to reduce the amount of sugar and salt in the store's products, eliminate trans fats over the next five years and develop a nutritional seal of approval to place on the front of food packages. Walmart's plans will increase consumer awareness about what they are buying.

The announcement came as exciting news for Obama's Let's Move initiative, a campaign to end childhood obesity.

"When I see a company like Walmart launch an initiative like this, I feel more hopeful than ever before," Obama said after the announcement. "We can improve how we make and sell food in this country."

At the new Walmart on Richmond Highway at North Kings Highway, shoppers already enjoy the fresh produce department and are eager to see the new changes roll out. Last year the company promised to incorporate more fresh and local produce in their stores.

"I've never had a problem knowing what's good and bad for me, but so many people don't even read the ingredients," shopper Alicia Robertson said. "At least Walmart is doing the labels before the FDA makes them. They are still a company, and they want to control their packaging."

"Honestly, I don't know what a trans fat is, but everybody says that's why I'm so fat," shopper Latisha Brown said. "Why do they sell it to me if it's bad for me? Aren't foods supposed to be checked or something?"

Walmart has announced plans to open stores in Washington, D.C., despite local criticism. This means our Walmart on Richmond Highway will soon lose its closest to the District distinction
